Enhanced High Chromium Iron is widely used in early finishing stands of hot strip mills.The microstructure consists of a tempered bainitic/ martensitic matrix with Cr7C3 carbides and MC type carbides homogeneously distributed in the matrix.
Application
- Work Rolls for early finishing stands (F1-F4) of HSM and early stands of CSP mills.
- Work Rolls for Heavy Plate mills and Temper mills.

Good High-Temperature Stability
With a martensitic or tempered martensitic matrix reinforced by a high volume fraction of chromium-rich carbides, predominantly of the M₇C₃ type, the carbides are distributed in a continuous or semi-continuous network, providing effective structural support to the roll surface and serving as the primary source of wear resistance. The roll surface microstructure remains stable and is capable of maintaining hardness and wear resistance under elevated temperature conditions, making it suitable for medium- to high-temperature rolling processes.

Strong Resistance to Thermal Cracking
Through optimized alloy composition and microstructure control, high-hardness chromium carbides significantly reduce abrasive and adhesive wear rates under rolling contact conditions, enabling reliable performance in medium to high load rolling operations. Under cyclic heating and cooling conditions, the roll exhibits a certain level of thermal fatigue resistance, effectively suppressing the initiation and propagation of thermal cracks.
- Good Surface Quality Retention Capability
During repeated heating–cooling cycles, the high chromium cast iron matrix maintains a certain degree of hot hardness retention. However, due to the relatively high carbide volume fraction, its thermal fatigue resistance and resistance to thermal cracking are generally lower than those of high-speed steel, making it more suitable for mill stands subjected to moderate thermal shock intensity.
